Targeted Consultation on the Draft Principles for Accessing and Using Publicly Funded Data for Health Research

Closed on Monday, 16 February 2015, 10:00am (AEST). Submissions are no longer being accepted.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is currently seeking feedback on the draft Principles for accessing and using publicly funded data for health research (the draft Guide). The draft Guide is intended to provide a framework of principles for researchers and data custodians to consider when requests or applications are made for access to existing health and health-related datasets for research purposes.  By improving access to data for research purposes, the draft Guide has the ultimate aim of improving the quality of public health and health services research in Australia.

The draft Guide has been developed by NHMRC’s Prevention and Community Health Committee and Data Reference Group in recognition that researchers and data custodians often have different perspectives and priorities in data sharing. It aims to facilitate communication between researchers and data custodians to foster a better understanding of respective roles and responsibilities, and to optimise the appropriate use of publicly-funded data for health-related research. The Guide does not mandate how and when custodians provide data, nor restrict an organisation from using its own data access policies.

Data custodians and researchers using publicly funded health and health-related datasets are the target audience for the draft Guide. The aim of this targeted consultation is to determine whether the draft Guide serves its intended purpose and is suitable for the target audience, and how it can be best implemented across Australia.

You are invited to make a submission by answering the questions listed in the online submission form below. NHMRC will only give consideration to submissions that address the consultation questions. However, there is no requirement to answer all questions, just those that are relevant to you or your organisation. Question eight allows for editorial comments on the draft Guide.

All submissions must be made through this online public consultation portal by the closing date. If this is not possible, please contact the NHMRC Project Officer to make alternative arrangements.
