The Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) welcomes the opportunity to provide a submission to the NHMRC Public Consultation on the draft documents Stem Cell Treatments: A quick guide for medical practitioners and frequently asked questions, and Frequently Asked Questions: A Resource for Patients.  CHF's comments focus on the resource for patients.

CHF is the national peak body representing the interests of Australian healthcare consumers.  CHF works to achieve safe, quality, timely healthcare for all Australians, supported by accessible health information and systems.

CHF appreciates the NHMRC's decision to develop separate resources for patients and medical practitioners.  Often, resources produced by scientific and research bodies do not adequately consider the level of consumers' training, background or expertise, resulting in documents that make extensive use of scientific terms and concepts and are inappropriate for consumers.

CHF is pleased to see that the draft Frequently Asked Questions resources produced for patients presents information in a consumer-friendly format.  The checklist of questions for a patient to ask their health professional, and the links provided to further information on stem cells, will be particularly useful for consumers.

CHF appreciates the opporutnity to provide a submission to the public consultation.  If you would like to discuss the issues raised in this submission in more detail, please contact CHF Project and Communications Officer, Carlo Malaca.
