Induction is generally 4-5%. Having the vaporiser on 3% could lead to an increased induction time leading to struggling and stress on the animal.

Appendix 3 – General blood sampling guidelines

The last section of the first paragraph suggests referral to the NHMRC guidelines.  - The Guidelines. Part III (D) Blood Collection; suggest that blood volume (BV) is approximately 5.5-7% of body weight. – Thus if taking a sample of 10%BV then an approximation of sample limit should be 0.7% of body weight for an animal in the wild.

I recommend the last sentence “Always seek expert advice” but put as first sentence.

Appendix 4 – Anaesthesia and sedation

I believe that this appendix should be deleted. It has many errors, and readers should be referred to the specific sections

If this section remains I recommend an introductory sentence which says "Anaesthesia should only be performed by trained personnel."

ERRORS:

Line2: Medetomidine dose is written incorrectly; should be (0.08-0.3mg/kg IM). In addition such a broad dose range would produce broad responses and should only be administered by trained personnel.

Line 5 - add the word "Induction" to  "......anaesthesia using 5% isofluorane for induction is the......."

Line 13 - thiopentone dose rate requires conditions:  "thiopentone 10(sedated)-25(un-sedated) mg/kg to effect....."

Line 14 'sued" - should be used

Appendix 5 – Health issues, disease control and zoonoses

Section on Chlamydophylosis: requires dilution % rate for Glutaraldehyde and Chloramine disinfectants

Section on Coccidiosis: requires dose rate in mg/kg for sulphonamides

Section on Hydatid disease: should have  a note that it is a reportable disease

Section on hyponatremia of seals: should have a route of administration for the 100-200mg/kg NaCl

Section on internal parasites: requires frequency of dosages for ivermectin, moxidectin, fenbendazole and oxfendazole

Section on Nephrosis:  should refer to Koalas

Section on Ringworm: should say it is caused by a fungus

Section on Thiamine deficiency: requires a route of administration of the 100mg of thiamine

Appendix 11 – Useful organisations and institutions

RSCPA should say  "RSPCA"

Appendix 13 – References and bibliography

The references could be more useful if presented in a standard format, such as Harvard, both in this section and throughout the document.

F. General comments
Comments:

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the draft.

As a guide, I believe the reader should be repeatedly referred to experts for advice. In addition sedation and anaesthesia should only be performed by trained personnel.

There is a significant lack of detail regarding pain relief. As relief form stress and pain is a dominant theme of welfare in animal research I believe the guideline needs to include this information prior to publishing.
