We note your consultation document on proposed revisions to the Australian Code of Practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes, in particular the suggestion of direct veterinary involvement in the oversight of procedures such as anaesthesia and surgery. We currently carry out a number of preclinical studies designed to improve understanding of vascular disease and develop new treatments and the requirements for a veterinary practitioner to be present at all procedures would severely limit the practicality of undertaking animal work. The implications of this would be a significant increase in both the time and cost associated with research work, with subsequent limitations of the ability to carry out this work. Our institution currently has training practices in place for the handling of animals used in research, and we therefore feel that this additional aspect of the code would not be advantageous to improving mouse handling practices.
