As a member of the community and an Accredited Practising Dietitian I strongly believe that any Australian food guidance system should take into account environmental considerations.  I am concerned that the draft guidelines do not place sufficient emphasis on these issues.  We can no longer ignore the fact that our national food system needs to become more sustainable and the public needs to be educated and informed on making more sustainable food choices.  Practical guidance around shopping foods with less processing and transport and organic food production methods is one way to encourage the public to choose more sustainable foods.  Also, I believe that environmentally friendly cooking methods should be included.  I believe it is unwise to release a food guidance system with no consideration for the environmental impact and sustainability of the diet recommended.
