Public consultation on “A Framework for NHMRC Assessment and Funding of Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies”

Closed on Friday, 14 July 2017, 11:59pm (AEDT). Submissions are no longer being accepted.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) invites you to comment on the proposed Framework for NHMRC Assessment and Funding of Clinical Trials and Cohort Studies.

High quality clinical trials and cohort studies are the cornerstone of modern evidence-based decision making. Although they can be expensive to do well, they can lead to significant changes in policy or practice, improvements in health and wellbeing and cost savings to the health system. It is therefore critical that the framework applied to their assessment and funding by NHMRC is fit for purpose and supports efficient, relevant, high quality studies that will fill gaps in knowledge and produce meaningful, implementable findings.

A discussion paper has been prepared and is now available for consultation. The paper describes the challenges faced by NHMRC when funding clinical trials and cohort studies and proposes an assessment and funding framework for the future built around three key principles: the need for a strong rationale, the appropriateness of the design, and the achievement of milestones. The framework was developed by the NHMRC Working Group on Clinical Trials and Large Studies, a Joint Sub-Committee of Research Committee and the Health Translation Advisory Committee.

Individuals or organisations are invited to respond to the consultation questions, by lodging an online submission using the template provided.

This consultation paper seeks feedback on the proposed funding framework for clinical trials and cohort studies. You are invited to consider the proposal and to address the following questions:

  • The framework requires all applications for funding to support a clinical trial or cohort study to demonstrate that the proposed study is asking the right questions, and to explain why a new study is needed. The argument must be informed by a relevant systematic review (or a comprehensive and systematic search for studies). Do you have any comments on this requirement?
  • The framework requires all applications for funding to support a clinical trial or cohort study to demonstrate that the design of the study is appropriate and to adequately address all items in the SPIRIT Statement. Do you have any comments on this requirement?
  • The framework requires all applications for funding to support a clinical trial or cohort study to clearly articulate appropriate milestones. Progress against milestones will be monitored and failure to meet agreed milestones may result in discontinuation of grant funding. Do you have any comments on this requirement?
  • Do you have other comments about the framework?
