Review of the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research

Closed on Tuesday, 28 February 2017, 11:59pm (AEDT). Submissions are no longer being accepted.

The Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2007) (the Code) was published in 2007 and is currently under review. The Code review is a joint endeavour between the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC) and Universities Australia (UA).

The Code guides institutions and researchers in responsible research practices by setting the required standards, and provides advice on managing departures from these standards. The Code is intended primarily for use by any individual or institution conducting research in Australia.

NHMRC, ARC and UA are proposing to streamline the Code into a principles-based document that will be supported by guides that provide advice and requirements for implementation of the Code. The first guide is on investigating and managing potential breaches of the Code (the Guide). Subsequent guides will be developed based in part on advice received during public consultation and on relevant areas of Part A of the existing Code.

This new approach has been informed by extensive consultation with the research sector and advice from the Code Review Committee (chaired by Professor Mike Calford) and the Better Practice Guides working group (chaired by Dr Karolyn White). Information on the review and the committee members can be found on the NHMRC website.

The draft principles-based Code and the first draft Guide have been released for public consultation. You are invited under paragraph 13(d) of the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992 to make a submission to NHMRC about the draft documents. Your submission must contain one or more of the following:

  • comments on specific sections of the draft documents
  • answers to consultation questions
  • general comments.

The draft documents are accompanied by an explanation of the new approach (including a table that compares the current Code with the new approach) and frequently asked questions (FAQ). The FAQ document will in particular provide assistance during preparation of submissions since it addresses concerns about the new approach that have already been raised by key stakeholders.

NHMRC, ARC and UA are keen to ensure that the Australian community and research sector has the best opportunity to participate in developing guidance on the expected standards for Australian research.

The date of release for the final revised Code and first Guide is highly dependent on the number and complexity of submissions received during public consultation, but is expected to be in the second half of 2017. Submissions received during public consultation will be considered during the final revisions to the draft documents.
