Australian Drinking Water Guidelines: per- and poly-fluoroalkylated substances draft chemical fact sheet and health based guideline values

Closed on Saturday, 21 October 2017, 05:00pm (AEDT). Submissions are no longer being accepted.

The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) contains fact sheets and health based guideline values for a number of chemicals that might be present in drinking water. The health guideline value for each chemical is the concentration that, based on present knowledge, does not result in any significant risk to the health of the consumer over a lifetime of consumption and is consistent with water of good quality.

The draft chemical fact sheet and health based guideline values for per-  and  poly fluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) is based on the work of Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and further developed with the  expert  advice  of  the  Water  Quality  Advisory  Committee (WQAC).

National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Council has approved public consultation for the draft chemical fact sheet and health based guideline values for PFAS for drinking water supplies. You are invited, under paragraph 13(d) of the NHMRC Act 1992, to make a submission to NHMRC regarding this draft document.

Concerns raised during public consultation will be addressed by WQAC in finalising the chemical fact sheet and health based guideline value. Following this, approval from NHMRC Council will be sought for publication as part of the ADWG .

PFAS, which include the chemicals perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), is of interest due to their historical use in firefighting foam and common household and industrial products. Their use has resulted in the identification of a number of sites around Australia where they have been found in water sources (surface and ground) and on adjacent land.

NHMRC is seeking responses to the following questions.

  1. Is the information provided relevant and clear?
  2. Is there any additional evidence on the safety of per- and poly-fluoroalkylated substances in drinking water that needs to be considered?
  3. Do you have any general comments on the draft fact sheet?

NHMRC is seeking responses to specific questions that relate to the draft chemical fact sheet and health based guideline values on PFAS.

Issues raised during public consultation on other aspects of the ADWG or water quality is not within scope of this process and therefore will not be considered.
